Thousands of protesters and activists from all generations gathered at Mediola bridge near Malacanang to mark the 37th year anniversary of martial law in the Philippine. Victims of martial law and those of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo were united to stand against another martial rule and to honor the memories of those who laid down their lives fighting for genuine democracy.

On September 21, 1972, the late dictator President Ferdinand Marcos signed Proclamation Decree 1081 placing the entire nation under martial law. Gross human rights violations were committed by state authorities. Activists were detained if not killed. Freedom of expression and association were suppressed. The writ of habeas corpus was suspended. The iron fist of the state griped the whole country. It was depicted as the darkest part of Philippine history.

Thirty seven (37) years later, the Arroyo administration put the country for almost a decade under undeclared martial rule. According to KARAPATAN (alliance for the Advancement of People’s Right), the regimes insecurities already claimed 1,093 victims of extra-judicial killings, 209 victims of enforced disappearance, there are more than a thousand torture victims and hundreds of thousands of victims of displacements and forcible evacuations. Marie Hilao-Enriquez, chairperson of KARAPATAN and a martial law victim herself, said that “Marcos and Arroyo are no different. These human rights violations perpetrated by the state security forces and its cohorts are reminiscent of Marcos’ era, but made worst with disguised booming economy, peace and democracy which the Arroyo tries to project”.

Repression of democratic rights under Arroyo administration gave the youth insights and lessons about martial law, its youth representative said. Claimant victims of Marcos dictatorship are still fighting for their indemnification now since their case gained victory at a US court in Hawaii and held the Arroyo government for its continued delay.

“We join the nation in commemorating this dark period in our nation’s history along with the strong resolve to never again allow the terror of martial rule to be imposed on the Filipino people. We ask those aspiring for office to make the same pledge,” said Bayan (New patriotic Alliance) secretary general Renato M. Reyes, Jr.

The demontstrators shouted “Justice to All Victims of Human Rights Abuses, Never Again to Martial Rule!”. ###

Demonstrators in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki called for 'no more death workers in the name of profit', just few days after the death of a man whilst working in the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair. According to the organisers SYRIZA (a coalition of left-wing parties), 205 workers lost their lives in Greece, in work related accidents, since the beginning of the year.

'The reality that the workers live daily, the inhuman working conditions, the lack of heath and safety measures for the human life itselt, is not the item for discussion in the news bulletins of 8pm, and will not be a topic in the debates in the entire pre-election period' the organisers added.

Greece is holding early general elections on the 4'th of October, and so far the main theme of the pre-election campaign has been the economy. A live TV debate of the party political leaders is due to place on Monday and Tuesday.
