Netherlands celebrates the tenth anniversary since the introduction of marriage for same-sex. Since then, ten countries have followed in its wake authorizing gay marriage. Other countries have adopted legislation regarding civil unions, which give more or less extended rights to homosexuals (adoption, paternity).
Venezuela in 2005, following the call of Lesbians and Gays International Association (ILGA), is celebrated for the first time on 17 more International Day Against Homophobia and the same day when there are candidates in the Parliamentary Elections that same year, Heisler Vaamonde, Jose Ramon Merentes and Tamara Adrian.
On July 14, 2006 was the first homosexual marriage in the country, conducted by the British Embassy, including a Venezuelan citizen and one British, an act which was reported to Venezuelan authorities.

Note that in Carúpano (Sucre State) is celebrated Carnival Gala Gay called "Night of the Fireflies" is one of the most deeply rooted social events in the community and has strong participation of local people. Currently, homosexuality, while not fully accepted, is tolerated by the majority of the population.
The artist had claimed that CHACAO CULTURE staff was under pressure to replace the image of the gay couple kissing by "softer" images. After three failed attempts the mural for tolerance remains amongst the citizenry, the artist returned to painting the mural. The homosexual society in Venezuela expects to see freedom of expression and recognition of their rights in the country.
