The unknown beauty of post-conflict Sierra Leone

Pre-war, Sierra Leone attracted tens of thousands of tourists every year year. They came to enjoy the country’s unique natural beauty: secluded white-sand beaches, unspoilt rainforest, and lush green mountains.

But the decade-long civil war, which ended in 2001, destroyed the tourist industry and much of the tourism infrastructure. Now, after 10-years of peace, Sierra Leone is trying to attract foreign visitors and create a stable tourism climate.
